Acupuncture is a therapeutic treatment which involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body, which has been practised in China in some form for at least 2000 years. It developed from the practice of stimulating painful areas of the body using the hands, stones and fish bones, which over time ancient doctors recognised could heal the pain in other parts of the body and alleviate the signs and symptoms of illness. These findings were systematised into a coherent model of understanding, linking the mind and body to phenomena experienced in the natural world.
The ancient Chinese understood all phenomena in the world to be a manifestation of qi (pronounced Chee), and that illness occurs when there is a lack of harmony of Qi. This concept can be difficult to interpret and is often mistranslated as “energy”. In medical terms, qi can be seen in our current scientific understanding as bioelectricity, with acupuncture points often being areas with electrical conductance. Recent MRI studies have indicated that when needled, acupuncture points have a more profound effect on the brain than none acupuncture points.
